A question of faith – Tales of ale

The pope wondered why Bavarian monks continued to consume great quantities of strong beer during Lent. He therefore asked for a sample of the beer to be sent to him in Rome. But by the time it reached Rome after a long and arduous journey over the Alps, the beer had become so spoilt that the Pope was full of admiration for the Bavarians for subjecting their gut to such castigation. He therefore granted the monks permission to continue drinking the beer during Lent.
